Summer 2020 Update

Bringing people together…

There’s a reason our mission statement starts with those three words. It’s who we are. It’s central to how we do ministry.

It has been a difficult spring as we shelter in place, intentionally avoiding being together. In the past months, we have learned how to be community in new and different ways. And how to share God’s love by doing new things – like standing 6 feet apart and wearing masks in public.

The Crossways Board met on May 4 to discuss how to be camp in the light of these new realities. We sifted through expert information, our faith, best practices, and gut feelings. We tried to think our way out of this reality with creativity and hope.

In the end, our highest concern is for the safety and well-being of all of God’s people. Our campers, staff, and volunteers. The community around us locally and across Wisconsin. Those who are sick, and those who are caring for them. Covid-19 poses very serious risks, and there is still far too much uncertainty about this virus.

So to best care for our camps and our community, the board voted unanimously to cancel all summer programming for 2020.

I am certain you have lots of questions about the details for how we will work this out. We are creating an FAQ document which will be posted on our website. As we receive questions from all of you, we will be updating that document. You can find it here: COVID-19 FAQs

This will have a significant financial impact on Crossways. Most of our annual revenue comes from summer camp, and we will need your help to close the gap on our budget. The board is working to crunch numbers, but our immediate concern is that once our Small Business Association loan runs out, we are at risk of losing our permanent staff.

We are asking all of our supporters to prayerfully consider how you can help Crossways get through a summer that has no revenue. If you are interested in making a matching or lead donation, please be in contact with me directly. More details on how to give will be sent in a separate fundraising campaign before the end of the month.

This is not the summer we were hoping for. But as followers of Jesus, we are people of hope. So let us come together in hope for what might be next, knowing that “hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.” (Romans 5:5)
